Seminaire Episteme CSPC 2010-11

Ceci est la page du séminaire de lecture de textes en philosophie de la connaissance du Certificat de Philosophie Contemporaine pour l'année 2010-11 (Université de Genève). Le séminaire vise à mettre les étudiants à niveau sur les débats récents en philosophie de la connaissance. Notre thématique pour cette année est celle de savoir comment la connaissance – mais aussi d'autres biens épistémiques comme la croyance rationnelle ou justifiée – est liée à l'action. Nous mettons particulièrement l'accent sur les approches probabilistes de la croyance rationnelle et de la confirmation, qu'on considère souvent comme des outils adéquats pour réfléchir à la décision sous incertitude. Le séminaire est organisé par le groupe Episteme: Pascal Engel (professeur ordinaire), Ariel Cecchi (candoc), Julien Dutant (assistant), Santiago Echeverri (post-doc), Davide Fassio (candoc), Arturs Logins (candoc), Anne Meylan (post-doc).

This is the page of the reading seminar in epistemology in the Certificat de Philosophie Contemporaine 2010-11 (University of Geneva). The seminar is aimed at bringing students up-to-date on recent debates in epistemology. This year we focus on the broad topic of how knowledge – as well other epistemic goods such as justified belief or rational belief – relates to action. We put a particular emphasis on probabilistic approaches to rational belief and confirmation, which are widely thought to provide an appropriate framework to think about decision under uncertainty. The Seminar is organised by the Episteme group: Pascal Engel (professeur ordinaire), Ariel Cecchi (candoc), Julien Dutant (assistant), Santiago Echeverri (post-doc), Davide Fassio (candoc), Arturs Logins (candoc), Anne Meylan (post-doc).

Descriptif

L'essentiel du séminaire consistera en la lecture suivie de deux livres: une exposition du bayésianisme (probabilisme subjectiviste) en épistémologie et en théorie de la décision (Jeffrey 2002) et une défense de l'idée que des notions comme la connaissance et la justification sont affectées par des facteurs pragmatiques (Fantl et McGrath 2010). Nous aurons également des présentations invitées et, si besoin est, des sessions sur des thèmes plus spécifiques.

Pour les séances sur Jeffrey (2002) et Fantl et McGrath (2010), les participants doivent lire les chapitres concernés à l'avance. Ils seront repris et discutés pendant le séminaire.

The seminar will mostly consist in the detailed reading of two books: an exposition of bayesianism (subjectivist probabilism) in epistemology and decision theory (Jeffrey 2005) and a defence of the idea that notions such as justification and knowledge are affected by pragmatic factors (Fantl and McGrath 2010). We will also have invited presentations and, if needed, sessions on more specific themes.

For the sessions on Jeffrey (2002) and Fantl and McGrath (2010), participants are expected to read the relevant chapters in advance. The chapters will be summed up and discussed during the seminar.
