Thumos Manifesto (ideas that the Thumos members tend to share)

Values and Norms

Emotion and Intentionality

Emotions and Values

Emotions and other Mental episodes

  • Emotions cannot be reduced to desires or other conative states. (Arguments)
  • Emotions cannot be reduced to beliefs or judgments. (Arguments)
  • Emotions cannot be reduced to complexes of beliefs and desires (nor to complexes of other conative states and beliefs). (Arguments)
  • If S desires that P, then S believes that P is non-actual. (Arguments)

Shame and Guilt

  • Shame is distinct from Guilt. (Arguments)
  • Shame is closely linked to value, while guilt is closely linked to norms. (Arguments)
  • Shame is more important to morality than guilt. (Arguments)

Thumos disputes

Values and Norms

  • Norms apply only to actions (Olivier) VS. There are "ought to be", besides "ought to do" (Kevin, Otto, Julien)

Rights and Norms

  • Rights are sui generis normative concepts (on a par with values, norms and virtues) VS. Rights are reducible to norms and values (Arguments)

Thin and Thick values

  • Thick values are reducible to thin values + non-normative properties (Olivier) VS. Thick values are sui generis values, irreducible to thin values + some non-normative properties (Kevin) (Arguments)

Emotions and values

  • The direct cognition (perception, feeling) of a value is sufficient for having an emotion (Julien, Fabrice) VS. One can feel or perceive values without having emotions (Kevin, Olivier)
  • Bodily feelings constitute our direct access to the values of the objet of our emotions (Julien, Fabrice) VS. Bodily feelings do not present values external to the body (Kevin, Olivier)

Emotions and pleasure

  • Every occurence of emotion is either pleasant or unpleasant (never neutral): Fabrice, Julien, Olivier, Federico. VS. Some emotions (surprise) are neither pleasant nor unpleasant (Kevin).
  • There is one type of hedonic done, which varies in intensity from pleasantness to unpleasantness, but which is shared by all emotions (Olivier). VS. There are different types of pleasantnesses, beside difference in intensity (Fabrice, Kevin)

Emotions and other mental episodes

  • Emotions are necessarily linked to conations (desires, impulses, volitions, actions tendencies...) ? (Kevin) VS. One can have emotions without any associated conations (Olivier).
  • We can only have conations toward things we think we can do (Federico) VS. Some conations (wishes) are directed toward things we believe we cannot do (Olivier)
